Zen and the art of managing patients!

For some bizzare reason, the end of every night duty, if i am not swamped with any responsibilities, brings out the writer in me. Not a very good writer..not one who would write long epitaphs or even longer poems, that touch the heart of millions, but more like the writers that churn out the books u get sold on the roadside...in the name of B grade porn. Not A grade ..but B grade porn! It just feels like magic!! So here is my contribution to humanity.

The Accident and Emeregncy department is one where u enter with much trepidition. Its not like the ward where u are introduced to everyone, have ample time to get to know people and for them to get to know u and finally gel together. Imagine being thrown in the deep end of a swimming pool. This is what A & E is like!! U thrash around and paddle really hard to finally get to one side and barely manage to hold on. All the while imagine another hundred people trying to do the same in that confined space. when u finally get to one side and get a firm hold is when u have a good grasp of A & E. Thats when all the people around u finally look at u and ask u ur name. Consider that moment as the time when u have earned ur respect in that A & E.

It can be a hard battle sometimes. Many times the nurses are just downright mean..which is very typical of most A & E 's around U.K. Other times the doctors develop an out and out narrow minded and arrogant attitude. And then starts all the commotion. Somehow, after my tenure in this department, i have come to the conclusion that any A & E can systematically be broken down to ease ur period of time in it. Itsalways best to start at the bottom...the nurses ...once u have their confidence...trust me u pretty much have th ewhole department. Now all that remains after that is fine tuning ur act to gel with ur colleagues.

Listen. learn and watch this space ..i say..for more on how to manange ur patients in ur local A & E.
